candle care

discover our ultimate guide to the art of candle care designed to ensure you get the best out of your NOA candle. you can also find candle care information on the packaging of our products.

  • The first burn is and always will be the most important thing with your candle, but why? Candles are like onions, they have layers or ‘memory rings’ which to make it simple remember how far you burn your candle and will never go past that point. The memory ring is the indent made by the wax on its initial burn and makes the edge where all future burns will reach. In other words, if you rush your first burn and allow it to only reach halfway to the edge it WILL tunnel all the way down resulting in a huge loss of wax and you not getting the most out of your product which is why we always advise you allow time on the first burn and be patient for it to reach the edge of the jar as in the long run you’ll be thankful you did!

With that aside, if you want to master the art of candle care we’ve made it just that bit easier as when we do our tests we monitor the duration in which it takes for the melt pool to reach the edge of the jar (and we are going to share it with you!)

    The First Burn:

Small (120ml) - Between 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach the edge of the jar. We recommend an initial burn time of 2 hours.

Medium (180ml) - Between 1 hour to 1.30 hours to reach the edge of the jar. We recommend an initial burn time of 2.5 hours.

Large (300ml) - Between 1.45 hours and 2 hours to reach the edge of the jar. We recommend an initial burn time of 3 hours.

Remember, these recommended burn times are from our tests and may differ slightly when in your home as many factors impact the speed of a burning candle. If your space is cold or your candle is kept in a drafty area (such as windowsills) you may find it takes a little longer to reach a full melt pool. If your candle is struggling move to a warmer area away from drafts. As always do not exceed a burn time of 4 hours.

  • there is never a better time to get some good habits, especially when it comes to your candle! Before each burn trim the wick to around 3mm, remove any debris from the wax pool and discard any soot molecules that have formed on the wick. This ensures that your candle will burn perfectly and release fragrance fully into your space without burning too hot. Failing to trim your wicks can result in the jar overheating and in severe cases could cause a fire but by practicing proper candle care before each burn you should never have any issues.

Every now and again you may need to trim the wick when it’s burning, here are some signs it may need a trim:

    • Your wick is curling when burning.

    • Your wick is forming ‘soot gremlins’

    • Your wick is smoking.

    • The flame is growing too high and flickering excessively.

If you practice correct candle care and trim the wick before each burn to approx 3mm you should not see any of these issues occur but if you do simply extinguish the candle, allow to cool and then trim down your wick and remove any debris from the wax pool before relighting.

  • We always recommend customers leave between 1.5 and 2cm of wax at the base of the jar for safety purposes. Each NOA candle is complete with a metal safety cut off at the end of our wicks too just in case you forget!

If you want to get the last bit of use out of the leftover wax pop your candle in the freezer and when frozen remove the wax from the jar and use as a wax melt. You can also re-use the jar for multiple purposes, just rinse with warm soapy water and give it a new lease of life as a cotton bud holder, mini plant pot or something else entirely!

  • you should be well on your way to being the candle master now and every master of their craft needs some tools to help right? Our offering of wick trimmers and candle snuffers make that candle care all the more easy!

reed diffuser + car diffuser care

more commonly known as our flame free collection, reed and car diffusers are notoriously known as low maintenance fragrance but here’s a few things you can do to prolong the life of your product and ensure the highest quality scent throw!

  • for diffusers to properly diffuse fragrance into your space, whether that be in a car or at home the reeds (home diffusers) or absorbent wood cap (car diffusers) need to be soaked in the liquid and tipped/flipped reguarly.

    Reed Diffusers

Flip your reeds every 1-2 weeks or when you notice the reeds are dry! You may find in the summer months the reeds dry more frequently, but don’t worry - heat actually improves the scent quality and throw of our diffusers and helps it diffuse into the air better!

    Car Diffusers

Since the reeds in car diffusers are replaced with an absorbent wood cap, we recommend you tip the car diffuser upside down for 3-5 seconds every week (or whenever you fancy a scent boost!) until liquid is visible in the cap and re-place in the chosen area of your car.

As always with diffuser liquid keep away from shiny, varnished areas, plastics and upholstery to avoid staining. If spilled wipe immediately to avoid damage and wash hands after handling!

  • all good things come to an end, but with our diffusers we offer half price plastic free refills so you can keep your flame free fragrance lasting all that bit longer. We even send you a handy reminder 60 days post purchase that a refill may be due soon! :)

  • When it comes to our home diffusers we always recommend displaying them in a place you pass frequently, such as your hallway - rather than providing a constant scent diffusers tend to produce a more gradual scent throw which is noticeable as you walk past the products or into a room!

We also recommend using a tray, plate or coaster to rest your diffusers on, especially when on shiny/varnished surfaces, as should you ever spill it won’t damage what’s underneath. Our candle plates are great for these!

  • when it comes to our car diffusers we find the best place for them is hanging from the interior mirror of your car or in the car vent, we always recommend checking up on the health of your diffuser too and ensuring the cap is in good condition as frequent tightening/loosening may cause the cap to deteriorate in time. Also make sure that your diffuser is secured to the mirror so it doesn’t fall off!

wax melts + burners

highly scented, long lasting - but want to know how to get the most out of our wax melts and how to use them? or maybe you want to learn how to clean your burners between use? this ones for you!

  • one thing you will notice is a little goes a LONG way when it comes to our wax melts! typically we recommend 1-2 cubes (depending on the size of your burner/how intense you want it) - in our home we find this is enough to fill our entire space, at times being even a little too ovepowering!

  • always store your melts out of direct sunlight, in a cool and dry place - this prolongs the scent and life of your product and ensures they stay the best quality, for the longest time. Typically our wax bars have a shelf life of up to 3 years when stored correctly!

  • all of our wax burners are approved for use as melters, but please do not use a saucepan, heater or anything not approved safe for use as burners as this could result in a fire.

  • the easiest way to switch out your melts between use is to pop a tealight under your burner when cool (for around 15 seconds) apply a small amount of pressure on the solid wax disk and it should pop right out! Then run a cotton ball or pad around the dish gently to remove any residue.

Another option is our three dish burner. which allows you to switch out without the mess by using our interchangeable dishes!

  • before each use we always recommend you visually inspect your burner before use, only ever use a standard 4 hour tealight (not the big ones!) and keep in sight when in use and burning. If you ever notice your burner with damage or is overheating in use extinguish the burner and discontinue use.
